What are Chakras?

The brief understanding of 'Chakras' originated in ancient India, however, its development has improved significantly over time and knowledge of Chakras has become international. Nowadays, Chakras are an important part of spiritual teachings, and more and more medical professionals are beginning to include them in their work.

So what are Chakras?

Chakras are energy forces within us dictating characteristics of our personality, spirituality, well-being, and sometimes even appearance. Our seven main Chakras align through our spine, starting from the base and finishing at the crown of our head. These Chakras have the most significance and can commonly be affected.

In Sanskrit, the word Chakra means 'wheel' which complements perfectly with how Chakras work. When the seven Chakras are functioning properly they work in unison, keeping each other moving and, therefore, balanced, however, when one of our Chakras becomes disconnected, the balance is then thrown off.

Each Chakra has its own purpose and function, this is why we may experience strain in certain aspects of our lives.

The Seven Main Chakras

1. The Root Chakra - Muladhara

Colour: Red

Element: Earth

Location: Base of spine

Purpose: The Root Chakra is our first energy centre and the first to develop. It is responsible for stability and security, major functions for healthy early development. The Root Chakra when balanced can project confidence, grounding, and a deep respect for nature. When affected, you may find yourself feeling fearful and experiencing a lack of physical and emotional energy and self-esteem.

.

2. The Sacral Chakra - Svadhishthana

Colour: Orange

Element: Water

Location: Lower Abdomen

Purpose: The Sacral Chakra is our next aligning energy Centre and is responsible for our creativity and sensuality. When in balance you may feel sexually liberated, confident, and imaginative. You may also find yourself taking more risks and seizing the moment. When out of balance, you may feel down and sexually frustrated. Your intuition may also feel blocked.

.

3. The Solar Plexus Chakra - Manipura

Colour: Yellow

Element: Fire

Location: Below the base of the ribcage

Purpose: The Third Chakra to develop is our Solar Plexus - this Chakra affects our motivation and ego. When aligned you feel humble, energised, productive, and focused, however, when affected you may feel irritable, low, unmotivated, and insecure.

.

4. The Heart Chakra - Anahata

Colour: Green

Element: Air

Location: Centre of chest

Purpose: The Heart Chakra is next and is responsible for our sense of worth, trust, and emotional balance. When in alignment you may tune in with your caring and more nurturing side. You may find it easier to attract healthy, loving relationships whether romantic or otherwise. When this Chakra is affected it may present in fluctuating mood swings, jealousy, insecurity, and broken relationships.

.

5. The Throat Chakra - Vishuddha

Colour: Blue

Element: Space

Location: Base of throat

Purpose: The fifth Chakra to develop is the Throat Chakra - this Chakra is responsible for our communication, expression, and beliefs. When in balance we may feel vocally confident, charismatic, approachable, and eager. And when unbalanced shyness, anxiety, and confusion are common symptoms.

.

6. The Third Eye Chakra - Ajna

Colour: Indigo

Element: None

Location: Between the eyes

Purpose: The Third Eye Chakra is the next aligning Chakra. Located where the pineal glands are, this Chakra is crucial for our spiritual awareness. When balanced you may feel emotionally, physically, and mentally vibrant. You may also experience a significant spiritual development, commonly increasing your intuition. When blocked you may feel a lack of clarity, inner peace, and happiness.

.

7. The Crown Chakra - Sahastrara

Colour: Violet & White

Element: None

Location: Crown of head

Purpose: Our last aligning Chakra is the Crown Chakra. This Chakra is associated with wisdom, clarity, and regulated thoughts. When this Chakra is in balance, you may feel inspired with thoughts and ideas. You may also find it easier to obtain information and to think logically. An unbalanced Crown Chakra usually manifests through mental blockages, feelings of disconnection, being overly analytical, and unusual nightmares.

Incense and Chakra Alignment

Read on as we discuss Incense and Chakra Alignment - how and why.

How Incense Aligns Our Chakras:

Our sense of smell is our most powerful sense. Embracing positive, natural scents has many great physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.

When burning and embracing incense it can naturally cleanse deep areas of our body and psyche which we couldn't reach otherwise. This also has a great impact on the alignment of our Chakras.

Best Scents For Chakra Alignment and Why:

The Root Chakra: Resins are great for Root Chakra balancing, especially Frakincense and Myrrh. This is because they are earthy scents, perfect for grounding energy and connecting you to your surroundings. Other great Root Chakra scents are Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Clove.

The Sacral Chakra: Hearty and homely scents such as Cinnamon and Sweet Orange are great Sacral Chakra cleansers. Spiced aromas are also great as they are known to spark lustful energy and creativity, both impactful on this Chakra. Some other Sacral Chakra-aligning scents include Rose, Frankincense, and Sandalwood.

The Solar Plexus: Spices such as Saffron and Clove are great Solar Plexus aligners - they are energising scents, perfect for empowering and bringing about motivation. More humbling scents such as Vanilla and Lemongrass can help with ego problems and irritation coinciding with a blocked Solar Plexus Chakra.

The Heart Chakra: Floral scents such as Rose, Lotus, and Jasmine are perfect Heart Chakra balancers. These scents are often associated with romance, love, and happiness, things a strong Heart Chakra can manifest. More herbaceous aromas such as Lavender and Rosemary are also great for strengthening the Heart Chakra.

The Throat Chakra: Peppermint and other minty scents are great for Throat Chakra balancing. Thanks to their fresh and cleansing aroma, they can reach blockages within the Throat and the nasal area. Other Throat Chakra balancing scents include Jasmine, Lavender, and Sage.

The Third Eye Chakra: Cinnamon is a great spiritual-enhancing scent. It can help to remove blockages restricting intuition and clarity, thus strengthening The Third Eye Chakra. Other healing scents such as Rosemary and Patchouli can help to balance this Chakra.

The Crown Chakra: Floral aromas such as Jasmine and Lotus can help to improve our focus, creativity, and, mental clarity. They naturally manifest a balanced Crown Chakra. Palo Santa and Frankincense can also strengthen this Chakra.
