What are Chakras?

Chakras are invisible energy centres that run throughout the body, with the seven main ones located prominently down the spine.

These centres are responsible for our personality, feelings, and expression, essentially defining who we are. When one or more Chakras are unbalanced, it can negatively impact various aspects of our lives and personal growth.

The word "Chakra" originates from Sanskrit, essentially meaning "wheel", which perfectly describes how the seven main Chakras work. When the Chakras function in harmony, spinning together, we feel energised, happy, confident, grounded and truly ourselves. However, when one Chakra is thrown off balance, it can affect the others, leading to further imbalances.

What is the history of Chakras?

The concept of Chakras has been around for centuries, with many ancient spiritual and religious beings using the notion within their practices. However, the Chakra's origins date back to ancient Hinduism between 1500 BC and 500 BC.
.
The understanding of Chakras was first discovered in the oldest written religious text, The Vedas. However, they weren't written as the 'energy centres' we are familiar with, but rather as a King who 'turns the wheel of his empire'.
.
Chakras have become a worldwide known concept, attesting to the powerful knowledge and effects coinciding with Chakra strengthening. Many people have connected closer to their body, their spirituality, and their mind through practising the notion of Chakra strengthening.

What is Incense?

Incense is a popular tool used to cleanse energy, rid bad odours, and enhance spirituality. Its origins date back to ancient times, where the Egyptian and Greek civilisations burnt plant matter and extract as a way to connect to higher entities. It was seen an extremely sacred act, known to bring eternal fortune, protection, and luck.

Incense then became a popular tool within religions across the world, especially Buddhism and Hinduism. Its popularity remains, and more and more types of people, communities, and religions are integrating incense cleansing into their lives.

What are the types of incense?

There are many types of incense and types of incense scents. Each type has their own personal benefits, however, we find natural incense to be the most cleansing and healing of all. So lets dive into the main types of incense.

Sticks:

Incense sticks are made from a combination of aromatic powders, usually made from plant extracts, and adhesive powders set firmly around a wooden or bamboo stick. They are the most popular type of incense, however, they do have their disadvantages
.
Incense sticks usually coincide with a powerful, smoky fragrance, which in turn can irritate the lungs. This being said, incense sticks should be burnt once to twice a week at most.
.
Incense sticks, when burnt in moderation, can be extremely effective in strengthening our spirituality. They can help to harness our true potential and allow us to find balance, peace, and prosperity.
.
Cones:

Cones are similar to incense sticks. However, cones aren't set around a wooden stick, rather the powders are compressed into a cone shape.

Like incense sticks, cones produce a potent smoky fragrance, harmful to our bodies if overused. Commonly, cones have an even stronger smoke-like fragrance compared to other types of incense.

Unfortunately, cones and incense sticks usually come with added chemicals, down to modern advancements. However, in moderation, incense cones can be abundant in spiritual strengthening.

.

OUR FAVOURITE: Natural:

Natural incense is made by combining essential oils, resins, and dried botanicals. Although each of them can be burned separately, the real magic happens when they are burned together.

These natural extracts are sourced from different plants, each enriched with healing properties and grounding energy. The smoke produced by natural incense is not harsh or smoky, making it much gentler on our bodies.

There are many different natural incense scents available, each with its own personal benefits. Using natural incense is a great way to enhance our spiritual energy and align all seven of the main chakras.

The Seven Main Chakras

1. The Root Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Muladhara

Colour: Red

Element: Earth

Location: Base of spine

Purpose: The Root Chakra is our first energy centre to develop, especially within the years of 1-7. It is responsible for our sense of security and stability - perhaps this is why we crave routine and support as children. The Root Chakra also plays a major role in how grounded our energy is. All this being said, when the Root Chakra is imbalanced we may feel: a disconnect from nature, a lack of safety, unconfident, fearful, and lonely.

2. The Sacral Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Svadhishthana

Colour: Orange

Element: Water

Location: Lower abdomen

Purpose: The Sacral Chakra is our second Chakra to develop. This Chakra governs our creativity, sexuality, and desires. Without it, life would be boring. This being said, when this sacred Chakra is out of balance, our sex life is strongly affected. We may feel unconfident and undesirable, and perhaps our libido is at an all time low. We also may struggle with creative blocks leaving us uninspired, irritable, and unproductive.

3. The Solar Plexus Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Manipura

Colour: Yellow

Element: Fire

Location: Below the base of the ribcage

Purpose: The Solar Plexus is our third energy centre to develop, especially between the ages of 15-21. This Chakra defines our ego and self-esteem; it can also affect our motivation and willpower. This said when the Solar Plexus Chakra is unbalanced we tend to feel unproductive, uninspired, and low in energy. Our self-esteem and confidence may also feel damaged.

4. The Heart Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Anahata

Colour: Green

Element: Air

Location: Centre of chest

Purpose: The Heart Chakra is our fourth Chakra to develop. It strongly impacts how we are in our relationships, whether romantic or platonic. This Chakra can also affect our sex life - when it is out of balance we may feel a lack of desire, confidence, or drive within the bedroom. We may also struggle with empathy, compassion, and love. Or we may even find ourselves giving our love and attention to the wrong people.

5. The Throat Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Vishuddha

Colour: Blue

Element: Space

Location: Base of throat

Purpose: The Throat Chakra is our fifth Chakra to develop and is possibly the most often affected. It is responsible for our communication, vocal expression, and personal projection. This said, when this unruly Chakra is out of alignment, symptoms such as quietness, self-doubt, lack of expression, and lack of boundaries are commonly displayed. You may also feel anxious and feel a need to express yourself but can't.

6. The Third Eye Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Ajna

Colour: Indigo

Element: None

Location: In-between the eyebrows

Purpose: The Third Eye Chakra is our sixth aligning Chakra. This Chakra is significant in keeping our spirituality heightened. When the Third Eye Chakra is balanced, our intuition, clairvoyance, and clarity are all functioning well. However, when out of balance we can experience mental and spiritual blocks. We may also find ourselves feeling out of touch with our body, mind, and spirit - this can affect our happiness and sense of purpose.

7. The Crown Chakra

Name in Sanskrit: Sahastrara

Colour: Violet & white

Element: None

Location: Top of head (the crown)

Purpose: The Crown Chakra is our seventh and last Chakra to develop. It dictates our clarity, wisdom, beliefs, and thoughts. Without it, we would feel uninspired, a lack of thirst for knowledge, and possibly even bored. This said, when this sacred Chakra is out of balance we feel disassociated from our minds. We may also feel that our thoughts and ideas lack substance.

The Seven Chakras: How to Align Them With Incense

Here is a step by step guide on how to align the seven main Chakras with natural incense.

First, here is a list on everything you will need:

  • One ceramic oil warmer
  • Natural incense: essential oil, resin, & botanicals
  • Tea light candle
  • Pourable jug of water
  • Long lighter or match stick
  • Paper & pen

.

Step 1: Set Up Your Space

Set your space up so that it suits you and your comfort needs. Consider lighting, temperature, sounds, and seating.

Example: I enjoy a warm lighted room, tidy, mediative music playing, hot in temperature, and an array of cushions against a wall where I will sit.

.

Step 2: Arrange Your Incense

Place an unlit tea light candle into the hole of your warmer, there should be a ledge to place it on.

Then fill the top bowl-like surface of your oil warmer with water. Do this till it reaches 2/3rd of the height.

After this, carefully sprinkle your resin and botanicals into the water.

Then, add a few drops of your chosen essential oil (5-12).

.

Step 3: What Is Your Intention

Write down your intention for this Chakra strengthening - repeat to yourself until satisfied. Here are a few intention examples for each Chakra.

Root: 'I intend to feel more grounded'

Sacral: 'I want to regain my lost creativity, in the bedroom and out'

Solar Plexus: 'I intend to recharge my energy'

Heart: 'I want to love and be loved with boundaries'

Throat: 'I intend to be more assertive with my words'

Third Eye: 'I want to trust my intuition'

Crown: 'I intend to strengthen my beliefs and thoughts'

.

Step 4: Light Your Incense

Before lighting, ensure your oil warmer is on a heat proof surface away from anything that could be potentially hazardous.

Also make sure there is no children or pets within reach of you incense.

Then, with your long lighter or match stick, carefully light the tea light candle in your oil warmer.

Step back and embrace the healing scent of your natural incense.

.

Step 5: Meditate or Journal

Whilst your incense is burning, take this opportunity to strengthen your Chakras. This can be done through Chakra meditation and journalling.

I enjoy meditating, picturing warm energy healing each Chakra throughout my body. I also enjoy journalling for Chakra alignment - writing down mantras and gratitude can be extremely effective.

.

Step 6: Enjoy, Then Dispose

Once you are done with your incense, blow out the tea light candle.

Leave for 30-45 minutes before touching the oil warmer.

Then, carefully wipe the excess incense and water with a paper towel and dispose carefully into a bin.

Now your oil warmer can be used again.
