But Frankincense Isn't Still a Thing, Right?

Frankincense was an extremely sacred resin within ancient times - revered since 3000 BCE. However, it is now best known for its reference in ancient and holy texts, the most popular being the 'Bible'.
.
When it comes to incense in the modern West, Frankincense is often left behind in favour of more fashionable scents, but we think it's time to bring this ancient resin back. Not only does it smell incredible, but it is steeped in history, with some incredibly powerful benefits too.

What is Frankincense?

Olibanum, also known as Frankincense, is a natural aromatic resin sourced from tropical 'Boswellia' Sacra trees originating in the Middle East, India, Pakistan and Somalia. But due to the decline of the Boswellia species, Frankincense has become even more rare, and therefore more sacred and treasured.

What makes Frankincense Incense So Special?

Frankincense, whether in resin, essential oil, or incense form, possesses tons of robust healing and cleansing properties. Hundreds of different cultures, creeds, and religions have cultivated Frankincense for its incredible physical and spiritual benefits.

The History of Frankincense

Many are familiar with the biblical story of the three wise men, who bestowed upon a newborn baby Jesus three valuable gifts: Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. These were the most valuable products in the Middle East at that time, and it's not difficult to see why.
.
Frankincense is also a prominent part of the Arabian peninsula's history and culture. For thousands of years, Frankincense has been traded through this peninsula, making it a popular substance in Arabian countries as well as Africa and the Middle East.

Frankincense and Health

People throughout history have used Frankincense to assist with recovery. Its resin has been cultivated for centuries for its natural medicinal properties - it contains anti-inflammatory Boswellic acids ideal for easing most inflammatory diseases, including: asthma, arthritis, and bowel disease. It also acts as a robust pain relief, helping to heal headaches, neck and back pain, and stomach pain.
.
Frankincense has also been proven effective in cancer treatment, however, more research is needed and talking to a healthcare professional is always advised.

What is Frankincense Incense?

History

"Of all the exotic aromas and experiences from my sojourn in Ethiopia, it's the Frankincense I miss most." ~ Cathleen Falsani
The use of Frankincense incense dates back to around 5000 years ago during Antiquity.
.
The first known users of Frankincense as incense were the Ancient Egyptians who burned its resin to cleanse energy during the mummification process. The Egyptians sought the approval of their many Gods and the burning scent of Frankincense resin was seen as a spiritual offering.
.
The ladies of Ancient Egypt frequently wore the ash of Frankincense incense around their necks as a symbol of good fortune - they would also use the ash as eyeliner and for other cosmetic purposes.

What is it?

Frankincense incense comes in different forms including Sticks, Cones, Coils, and our favourite being, Natural Incense.
.
Incense Sticks: Incense sticks are an easy, cheap solution to incense burning. They consist of a combination of fragrant aromatics and combustible wood powders that form a paste. This is then set around a small stick, usually made from bamboo. Incense sticks produce a strong, pleasant aroma, however, most sticks available today have added chemicals which can be harmful to the body. This also applies to cones and coils.
.
Natural Incense: We may be biased, but we believe natural incense to be the best, all-rounded incense. So what is it? Natural incense is a combination of natural and aromatic substances sourced from various plant materials. These include, Resin - found within the bark of certain tropical trees, Essential oil - extracted from flowers, herbs, leaves, bark, fruit, spices, nuts, and seeds, and Botanicals - simply dried aromatic plant life. Natural incense is the most ancient form of incense burning, whilst also being the most healing, fragrant, and energising.
Frankincense natural incense consists of burning its essential oil and resin, however, we like to mix things up by combining different scents. Rosemary and Sweet Orange are great complimentary scents for Frankincense. For more on natural incense and how to burn it, Click here.

What Does Frankincense Incense Smell Like?

The perfume-like scent of Frankincense incense is commonly described as fresh, earthly, pine-like, and balsamic. There are also peppery and citrus notes to Frankincense incense, however, its woodsy essence is at the forefront.
.
Frankincense is the perfect fragrance for a cold, wintery evening - it can undoubtedly bring warmth and comfort into our home.

How to Burn Frankincense Incense

You will need:

  1. Natural Frankincense Incense - resin and oil
  2. Oil Warmer

  4. Candle Lighter (the long type to protect your fingers!)

Time needed: 20 minutes.

The shorter your oil warmer, the quicker and more intensely your incense blend will burn. Opt for a taller warmer if you are sensitive to strong fragrances or want a more subtle aroma.

  1. Fill the warmer

Fill around 3/4s of your warmer's top bowl-like surface with cold water... Then carefully add your oil and resin.

  2. Time for the fuel

Carefully place your tea light candle in the chamber.

  3. Light up

Light your candle using a candle lighter and enjoy the healing essence of Frankincense.

  4. Stay safe

Monitor your oil warmer closely during use, ensuring you do not place flammable items nearby.

  5. When you're finished

To extinguish, simply blow out the candle beneath your warmer and allow it to cool before touching - they can get pretty hot!
